Eliseo Castillo
Born in the city of Huehuetenango on June 14, 1879. Together with his brother Simeon won scholarship to study at the National Conservatory, where in 1906 were required to perform military service urgently on the border with El Salvador. Ended the conflict, moved to Santa Ana (El Salvador), where he had many triumphs as musicians, Eliseo standing as a composer.
The brothers Castillo returned to Huehuetenango in 1910, where Eliseo continued his creative work. Being the time of the waltzes, Eliseo composed several highly emotional and full of tenderness and sensitivity, which captivated the huehuetecos.
In his fox “My Sadness” he called it “The Anthem of Huehuetenango” and is, along with his waltz “Wake”, the melody par excellence of the serenades of Wednesday, the eve of the saint and Day Saints.
Among its main compositions are: Ecos de la Sierra”; “Ave sin nido”; “Luna de miel”; “Elisa”; “Un sueño”; “Lágrimas del alma”; “Primera sonrisa”; “Ternura”; “El encanto de un baile”; “Monedas y copas”; “Adelante Unionistas” and many more.
He was professor of Music Education of a whole generation of huehuetecos and moved to Quetzaltengo in the early twenties, having founded the Estudiantina of the School of Arts and Crafts era whose Director Professor Gabriel Arriola Porras.
He died in the capital on February 25 1927 and his remains lie in Huehuetenango in the pantheon of the family.
The municipality of Huehuetenango, in recognition of his musical work, he erected a bust in the El Calvario district of the city, and the Association of Musicians Huehuetecos created in 1976, the Order “Eliseo Castillo” to decorate the musicians who have excelled huehuetecos. The first award was imposed on J. Eduardo Tánchez the November 22, 1976.
