Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua (also Antigua Guatemala), in southern Guatemala City, capital of Sacatepéquez department, near Guatemala City. Located in a narrow valley at the foot of the dormant volcano Water (3,752 m).
It is the market for the neighbouring mountainous area, where coffee is grown high quality. The wheat, sugar cane and fruit and vegetables are other important crops. Antigua, founded in 1542 by the Spanish Francisco de la Cueva, was for over 200 years the seat of the Captaincy General of Guatemala-a large region covering almost the entire Central americas-until an earthquake completely destroyed the city in 1773. However, have been preserved in good condition some Spanish colonial buildings that make Antigua a major tourist attraction. Population (according to estimates by the year 1990) 27,800 inhabitants.
